Cancer: 1st Free Video Consultation for Cancer Patients

Problem

As the visiting oncologist to IIUMMC, I’m unable to attend my weekly oncology clinic at IIUMMC @ Kuantan, Pahang due to movement control order (MCO).

Cancer patients need treatment fast (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) in order to achieve higher cure rate for early stage cancer and to improve control of advanced stage cancer.

Innovate, not Procrastinate

Instead of waiting for MCO to be over by April 14 (or maybe later), I can immediately and continuously offer my service to cancer patients at IIUMMC via video consultation without any delay.

Thanks to the support from IIUMMC (administrator, nurses, IT department) and my team at Kuantan, we were able to conduct the first video consultation for cancer patients without any problem.

Video Consultation (VC): I’m at Beacon Hospital while my patient is at IIUMMC, 250km away.

There are some follow up cases today.

At the end of the video consultation, each patient got to know more regarding their diagnosis, cancer stage, outline of treatment plan and treatment options.

I believe this will reduce patient’s anxiety and allow them to seek appropriate treatment promptly.

Fear and delay in seeking cancer treatment is the main cause of late stage presentation of cancer, high recurrence rate and low curability of cancer.

Due to certain limitation, I also informed each patient that further physical examination and investigations (PET CT, MRI, blood results, tumor markers) will be required before finalising cancer treatment.

Future

I hope to broaden the usage of video consultation to reach out to more cancer patients at the East Coast of Malaysia (Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan).

Who knows? Maybe this video consultation service will become more prevalent in the near future, which will enable cancer patients to reach out to any oncologists, anywhere in Malaysia.

This will allow more cancer patients to seek early treatment and improve their chances of curing cancer.
